Um dos mais célebres filmes de suspense de sempre, realizado por Alfred Hitchcock em 1958, com JamesStewart, Kim Novak e Barbara Bel Geddes nos principais papéis. Stewart interpreta o papel de Scotie Ferguson,um polícia atormentado pelo seu medo de alturas, que é transferido para uma corporação de São Franciscodevido a suspeitas de não ter evitado a morte de um colega. Aí, é destacado para proteger Madeleine Elster(Kim Novak) dos seus constantes ataques suicidas. Depois de salvá-la de morrer afogada, não consegue,devido às suas vertigens, impedi-la de subir a uma torre e assiste impotente à sua morte, culpabilizando-se.Contudo, quando acidentalmente vê uma mulher muito parecida com ela coloca a hipótese de Madeleine estarviva. Para o sucesso deste filme contribuiu em grande parte a originalidade do desfecho da história, dovirtuosismo da banda sonora de Bernard Herrmann e sobretudo da interpretação de Stewart numa lutacomplexa com o seu bloqueio psicológico, tentando obter um equilíbrio emocional através de um amorobsessivo.
