Edith Piaf - Autumn Leaves (Les Feuilles Mortes)

The falling leaves
Drift by the window
The autumn leaves
All red and gold
I see your lips
The summer kisses
The sunburned hands
I used to hold.

Since you went away
The days grow long...
And soon I'll hear
Old winter songs
But I miss you most of all
My darling, when autumn leaves start to fall...

C'est un chanson
Qui nous ressemble
Toi qui m'aimais
Et je t'aimais
Nous vivions tous les deux ensemble
Tou qui m'aimais
Moi qui t'aimais

Mais la vie sépare
Ceux qui s'aiment
Tout doucement
Sans faire de bruit
Et la mer efface sur le sable
Les pas des amants désunis.

Since you went away
The days grow long...
And soon I'll hear
Old winter songs
But I miss you most of all
My darling, when autumn leaves start to fall...

This song is originaly composed by Joseph Kosma. The words came from Jacques Prevert. Yves Montand performed this bit in Marcel Carnes movie "Les Portes de la Nuit" in 1946. The first record came out on Capitol Records, sung by Jo Stafford.

I came to know Doris Day and her music through my mother back in the 1950's. She loved Perry Como, Nat "King" Cole, and Doris Day. Her Columbia albums were often played in our home stereo in Cuba. Her clean, delicately textured, and melodic voice filled every room of our household. So it is with great nostalgia that I bring you this gem of a song- "Autumn Leaves".

"Autumn Leaves" was originally a 1945 French song "Les Feuilles Mortes" (literally "Dead Leaves") with music by Joseph Kosma and lyrics by poet Jacques Prévert, English lyrics were written in 1947 by the American songwriter Johnny Mercer. With Mercer's exquisite lyrics the song became even more beautiful, it not only conveyed it's message of sadness and longing, but painted a story with the colors of Autumn.

I thought it fitting to use pictures of Doris Day and Rock Hudson as the main protagonists, given their popularity as a Romantic Comedy acting team, and in honor and tribute to their lifelong friendship.

This song is very dear to me and this is one of the most beautiful covers I've ever heard, and I've heard most of them... Taken from the album "Day by Day" released by Columbia Records on December 17, 1956; here you have Doris Day accompanied by Paul Weston's orchestra rendering an exquisite and beautiful version of "Autumn Leaves". Enjoy.

Les feuilles mortes

Yves Montand

Composição: Paroles: Jacques Prévert. Musique: Joseph Kosma autres interprètes: Mouloudji, Fernand Gignac
 .
.
{Refrain:}
.

This song "Les Feuilles Mortes" was wrote by the french surrealist poet Jacques Prévert.
In 1945, Prévert wrote the film script "Les Portes de la Nuit" (a film of Marcel Carné - 1946)),
from a ballet "Le Rendez-Vous" created by Roland Petit in 1945.

The two first verses of a song give the title : "Les enfants qui s'aiment s'embrassent debout/contre les Portes de la Nuit".

Jean Gabin and Marlene Dietrich had acepted to play the two characters,
but at last, they changed for another movie : "Martin Roumagnac".

A young french singer presented by Edith Piaf :
Yves Montand plays this very pessimist film and sung "Les Feuilles Mortes".

The music was created, before, by Joseph Kosma for the ballet "Le Rendez-Vous" in 1945,
and Prévert wrote, after, the words for the movie.

The poem was published, after the death of Jacques Prévert, in the book "Soleil de Nuit" in 1980.

Johnny Mercer had adapted the french words in the song "Autumn Leaves".

Autumn Leaves (song)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
.
"Autumn Leaves" is a much-recorded popular song. Originally it was a 1945 French song "Les feuilles mortes" (literally "The Dead Leaves") with music by Joseph Kosma and lyrics by poet Jacques Prévert. Yves Montand (with Irène Joachim) introduced "Les feuilles mortes" in 1946 in the film Les Portes de la Nuit.[1] The American songwriter Johnny Mercer wrote English lyrics in 1947 and Jo Stafford was among the first to perform this version. Autumn Leaves became a pop standard and a jazz standard in both languages, both as an instrumental and with a singer.
.
On December 24, 1950, French singer Edith Piaf rendered both French and English versions of this song on the radio programme The Big Show, hosted by Tallulah Bankhead.[2]
.
The Melachrino Strings Conductor: George Melachrino recorded a version in London on August 18, 1950. It was released by EMI on the His Master's Voice label as catalogue number B 9952.
.
The film Autumn Leaves (1956) starring Joan Crawford featured the song, as sung by Nat King Cole over the title sequence. The French songwriter Serge Gainsbourg paid tribute to this song in his own song "La chanson de Prévert".[3]
.
One of the most referred-to instrumental versions of this song is the one on the Cannonball Adderley album called "Somethin' Else" released in 1958, whose personnel included Miles Davis on trumpet, Hank Jones on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Blakey on drums.
.
In 1974 Chet Baker recorded a version at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey that has an improvisational solo by Chet that has become considered to be one of the best examples of Chet's work. Ironically Chet recorded it in concert F minor and adds a six bar tag of F minor at the end of every chorus.
.
The song also crossed over in the club scene when dance act Coldcut recorded a version in 1994, the resulting remix by Irresistable Force became widely regarded a classic of the chillout genre.
It is the corps song of the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps.[4]
.
Several different versions by the famous jazz pianist Bill Evans are recorded on CD and, more importantly, are available in songbooks as note for note transcriptions, thereby providing the aspiring jazz pianist an excellent opportunity to expand his musical vocabulary.
.
.

Chart appearances

In 1955 Roger Williams made the song a number one hit in the United States, the only piano instrumental to reach number one[5] and remaining in that position for four weeks.
